Polyester and nylon look stunning β€” sweat is when millions of microplastics start absorbing into your skin

The Environmental Impact of Polyester in Sportswear and Why Alternatives Matter

You already know polyester feels wrong on a hot day. That cling. That smell by afternoon. That film on your skin when you finally peel the top off. Your body was telling you something.

Polyester is basically plastic

Most activewear is petroleum fibre β€” polyester, nylon, elastane blends. Nylon is plastic too. It is marketed as performance. On your skin it behaves like wrapping yourself in a bag.

  • Traps heat. Plastic does not breathe. Mumbai humidity has nowhere to go.
  • Holds sweat against you. Odour builds. You shower. The top still smells by evening.
  • Microplastics on skin. Friction + sweat pulls shed fibres into pores. You cannot see it. Studies keep finding plastic particles in blood and tissue.
  • Hormone disruption risk. Many synthetics carry chemical finishes (BPA-class compounds, phthalates) to fake wicking and softness. Skin is not a barrier β€” it absorbs what it sits in for ten hours.

You are not being dramatic. You are sweating with plastic pressed against your ribs, waist, and thighs β€” and absorbing millions of microplastics without knowing it.

What women tell us after one wear

  • "I thought I was the problem β€” I was just in the wrong fabric." β€” Nidhi, Bandra
  • "My skin felt quiet for the first time in years." β€” Aanya, Juhu
  • "I stopped buying three-for-two polyester packs." β€” Meher, South Bombay

Why we built WEARTH without it

We use eucalyptus plant fibre β€” not petroleum. It releases heat, manages moisture naturally, and stays soft without chemical wicking sprays. It feels closer to a fine cotton shirt than to gym plastic, but it moves and recovers like proper activewear.

WEARTH is not "sustainable marketing." It is what you wear when you are done arguing with polyester on a 38Β°C day.
